Meet Mel

Melissa Pharr is accredited through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist. She works with her clients to address underlying muscle imbalances and develop sound functional movement patterns.  Melissa works from the perspective of building the body from the inside out to create a solid foundation for a large range of clients.  Melissa has trained with and was mentored by Jed Cronin, one of the top trainers in all of Town Sports International, Inc.  She is an active Spin Instructor and additionally focuses in NASM Special Populations and NASM Corrective Exercise.

Although her training focuses on the physical body, Melissa believes in treating the body as a whole. She has worked closely with Health Counselor, Hannah Williams, and Naturopath, Dr. Julie Wiener, to not only enhance her own health, but to incorporate holistic viewpoints within her practice.  Melissa believes in creating positive change in your body, enabling you to achieve optimal balance and shape.

All right, now that you’ve read my "official" bio, here's more about who I am today and how I got here . . .

Before I began my career as a Personal Trainer I was forty pounds heavier, hopelessly sugar addicted, disapproving of my own figure, and in complete disconnect with my body.  I KNEW I loved working out; what I didn’t know was the science behind it and what it takes to make permanent positive change.

As an actress and trainer, I constantly felt the pressure to look better. I was what I like to call a "Cardio Queen", putting in long hours on the machines and continuing to believe that if I worked a little bit harder, the person I saw in the mirror would be good enough.  I became so preoccupied with "results", that I had no way of reading the signs my body was giving me.  I was like 90% of gym-goers I see everyday: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Sound familiar? This is the definition of insanity!

It wasn’t until I became an educated trainer that I began to let go of those thoughts and see the benefits of smart, balanced, exercise routines.  I studied the body and how it worked as a Personal Trainer and through the eyes of a holistic practitioner. I started asking questions about the real obstacles that keep us from getting the body we want.  I was astonished by the countless factors that cause us to put ourselves last: sleep deprivation, overwork, feeling unfilled, body image, and lacking a honest desire to take care of our bodies.

I found that my body changed when I committed to building a relationship with myself that is not based on discipline or calorie counting. Instead, it's based on understanding, forgiveness and commitment to being the best version of myself. Although I will forever be on a journey that is filled with potential for more growth in countless areas, today I feel like I finally know the person I see in the mirror.

I love witnessing change within my clients, and sharing what I know to be true about health and fitness. I am so enthusiastic, so ready, and so willing to inspire change for you. I will help you shape your body and life through movement and exercise.

"Because of Mel, I actually look forward to going to my workouts! She gently pushes you in a safe way, but mostly she teaches you how to push yourself. Mel has helped me gain self-confidence, as well as pinpoint obstacles that stand in the way of a healthier and happier lifestyle. She’s been a source of fun, positive energy in my life and I hope that more people will get the chance to benefit from her support and encouragement." --Mandy Donovan, 32
